Passware, Inc., a leading global provider of password recovery, decryption, and electronic evidence discovery software, announced that its evidence discovery & decryption service Passware Kit will recover passwords from well-known Bitcoin wallet services. These include the prominent wallets of Blockchain.com (previously called Blockchain.info) and Bitcoin Core.
The Lack Of Password Recovery And Criminal Activity
Passware Kit is the first commercially accessible forensic software to recover passwords for notable Bitcoin wallets.
Currently, Bitcoin wallet platforms do not offer a solution for recovering lost passwords. Among such platforms is Blockchain.com. Blockchain.com’s support team does not possess the capability to regain access to lost or forgotten passwords of its users’ wallets.
According to Blockchain.com, “this is because we don’t have access to your wallet or your wallet password.”
Only the holder of Bitcoin has access to their password, therefore, if a holder does not recall or recover their password, it would “remain dormant forever as there is no way to uncover the private key(s) that would allow them to be spent again.”
Dmitry Sumin, the CEO of Passware asserts that Passware Kit comes forth to an environment with no password relief options, due to the nature of cryptocurrency.
The CEO said:
“Law enforcement worldwide recognizes that cryptocurrency gives criminals nearly unlimited access to anonymous money movement. For computer forensics investigating cases of contraband transactions, extortion, money laundering, and tax evasion these areas are the primary areas of criminal activity involved in cryptocurrency exchange. In addition, Bitcoin makes theft of the cryptocurrency easy for criminals. With no central customer hotline or way to force a password reset, recovering suspects’ passwords was nearly impossible until the latest release of Passware Kit.”
How Passware Kit Works, Other Features And Its Pricing
Consequently, Passware Kit enters a market with a complete dearth of private key recovery. It is able to achieve this key retrieval via the following:
1. Passware Kit first needs the wallet file, which usually carries the names of: wallet.aes.json (for a Blockchain.com wallet) or wallet.dat (for a Bitcoin Core wallet). These are typically stored on a suspect’s computer or are able for download from the wallet site.
2. The software then reaches the speed of 500,000 passwords per second on a single graphics processing unit (GPU).
3. This speed is then accelerated through distributed computing. (The Passware Kit Forensic license includes five Passware Kit Agents).
The Passware Kit Forensic 2018 v2 includes other features, such as: instant decryption of Apple File System (APFS) disks via an analysis of iCloud or iTunes backups; password removal for QuickBooks 2018 databases; acquisition of iOS 12.0 backups from iCloud; upgrades on core Passware Kit modules: encryption analyzer and dictionary attack.
Passware’s solution has been created for computer forensics and crime investigators. It has been exclusively placed in the Passware Kit’s Forensic edition.
Passware Kit is available for purchase for anyone, however, its prices are set to regulate its target audience. The Forensic Passware Kit is available directly from Passware and several worldwide resellers. It costs $995 and features a year of free updates.
