According to an announcement, a new major version – Bitcoin Core version 0.16.1 – adds new features and performance improvements has been officially released.
The new version reportedly covers new features, performance improvements, updated translations and also various bugfixes. The Bitcoin Core version eliminated miner block size recollecting the depreciation of the “-blockmaxsize” option for miners to limit their blocks’ sizes in version 0.15.1. It says that miners now must apply “-blockmaxweight” option if they want to limit the weight of their blocks.
Moreover, the new release stated that the upgrade affects wallets which were produced in 0.16 and later. Somehow, it will not be compatible even if the user tries to use newly created wallets in older versions.
At the end of February, the former Bitcoin Core client version was released and provided “full support” for Segregated Witness (SegWit) scaling technology. It is designed to lessen processing and wait times, as well as the transactions fees. Jimmy Song, the Bitcoin Core developer, stated the most striking feature of Bitcoin Core version 0.16.0:
“Native SegWit support (bech32) is going to get much more adoption as a result of this update. This will reduce block bloat and encourage more wallets in the ecosystem to adopt bech32.”
