The registered service mark for the term “Bitcoin” was successfully acquired by a UK-based firm. The trademark owner reportedly banned an Etsy trader from the BTC logo on its merchandise.
A.B.C. IPHoldings South West, LLC, a UK-based company and a Monopolip LTD subsidiary has registered the word “Bitcoin” in three different asset classes. These are:
• Class 25 – Clothing, footwear, and headgear.
• Class 32 – Fruit beverages, fruit juices, syrups, beers, mineral and aerated waters and other non-alcoholic beverages.
• Class 33 – Alcoholic beverages (excluding beers).
Monopolip LTD, owned by a Norwegian entrepreneur Kjell Halvor Landsverk, engages in “Leasing of intellectual property and similar products, except copyright works.” Aside from listing “Bitcoin”, the company has also filed for the registration of the word “Westworld”, similar to the well-known HBO series.
The “Bitcoin” trademark has been certified and filed in the official registrar on April 13th, 2018.
It is not clear as to how and why an apparently obscure firm was able to lock in one of the most commonly used terms in the past year.
